Uplands College claimed five trophies
at the 2010 Standard Bank Eisteddfod.
In the Afrikaans section of the Eisteddfod
we were overwhelmed by the adjudicator’s
positive comments on the high level
of our pupils’ Afrikaans. Eleven
Grade 8s took part and Thembi Nyati,
Thandeka Mashonganyika and Martin Meyer
were awarded an A+ while Tsavo Raath,
Willem Lourens and Hannah Matthews each
attained an A. Silver was awarded to
Belinda Fuller, Minette Veenemans, Frances
Badenhorst, Munenyasha Bopoto and Zuzu
Silinda. Amongst the grades 9, 11 and
12 participants Kyle Gilday walked away
with silver, Jan Jerling gold and Tineke
Pienaar an A+ for her very entertaining
poem.
In the Dance category, Kelly Hammond
walked away with the trophy for best
solo Latin-American dancer and also
received A+ and A++ for all her other
dance items. Amelia Maclennan’s
dance group, who won at the Inter-house
Music Competition, received an A+. Amelia
also danced in the solo section receiving
an A, while Willemien Jerling was awarded
an A+ and her ‘Feathers Dance’
an A.
The Light Music section seems to have
had a very strict adjudicator with many
silver and only a few gold certificates.
Grant Gulle received 78% for his own
composition. In the high school boys’
vocal section, Pierre Nel came third
and Ragina Sexwale won the trophy. In
the high school girls’ vocal section,
Palesa Theledi came second, Hannah Matthews
- one of the youngest in the section
- came third, with Anne-Marie Smith
fourth and then Willemien Jerling. Desiré
Fourie was awarded gold.
In the Classical Music Vocal section,
again Ragina Sexwale won the trophy
for high school boys and Anne-Marie
Smith won the trophy for girls! Willemien
Jerling and Refi Tsela came second and
third respectively. Desiré Fourie
and Tineke Pienaar took part in the
‘Other Language’ section
and both achieved gold certificates.
Our Orchestra and Choir were awarded
A+. Beth and Sarah Walker; Katherine
McGinn and Bianca Carlse (all on clarinet),
and Nicholas Ferreira on flute, took
part in the competitive instrumental
section. All were awarded gold. There
were other performances on various instruments,
including piano, guitar, flute and clarinet
by Hannah Matthews, Bianca Carlse, Jan
Jerling, Leandra Pienaar, Lente van
der Westhuizen, Claire Barnard, Nicholas
Ferreira, Robert Pienaar, Beth and Sarah
Walker and Katherine McGinn. Tsavo Raath
received the Junior Piano Trophy and
Beth Walker the High School Trophy for
clarinet. Eden van der Westhuysen was
awarded the Innibos Bursary.
The Art results were as follows: Prestige
was awarded to Shelley Adams (97%),
Celma Costa (96%), Ruby Wilson (95%),
Sam Davies (95%) and Maya Da Silva (95%).
Tarryn Craig, Grace Brauteseth, Tsavo
Raath, Caitlin Gibson, Bronwyn Tod,
Domenica Pupillo, Megan Cochrane, Emma
James, Sam Matthews, Anna Simeonova,
Lerato Rambau, Kayleen Van Rooyen and
Mikaela Erskog all achieved gold and
Hlompie Chiloane, Willemien Jerling,
Tiffany Briggs, Gemma Rawson, Sheila
David, Hannah Marings, Kylie-Anne Granat,
Danielle Human and Domenica Pupillo
each attained silver.
Bronze certificates were awarded to
Ross Culverwell, Amy Ernst, Sheila David,
Sarah Mitchell, Natalie Carle, Precious
Chicuru, Megan Nepgen, Grace Brauteseth,
Futhi Matsebula, Ewald Esselen, Gabriela
Butler, Holly Maclennan, Salma Mohamed
and Lauren Erasmus. Some students presented
more than one art work.

Speech and Drama section were Sandile
Tshabalala, Lauren Erasmus, Celma Costa,
Ariel Wainstein, Precious Chicuru, Rirrhandzu
Mculu, Nyeleti Khosa, Kendell Hundermark,
Thandeka Mashonganyika, Katherine McGinn,
Sinentokoso Matsebula and Tsavo Raath.
The Eisteddfod gala evening was a huge
success. Students who represented the
College were: Anne-Marie Smith, Beth
and Sarah Walker, Tineke Pienaar, Tsavo
Raath and Kelly Hammond.
