Debating
This is an extramural feature offered mainly in the first term. Debating offers an opportunity to argue and think critically.

The United Nations style of debating that is taught is fun, exciting and very aggressive. Quick thinking, clever wit and attitude are attributes required of good debaters.

Debating encourages higher order thinking and ‘out-the-box’ thinking and as such is a useful life skill and good preparation for the real world where this type of thinking and analysis are required on a daily basis.

Toastmasters

Toastmasters International, a non-profit organisation, offers a course to help young people develop their communication and leadership skills.

The Youth Leadership Program consists of eight sessions in the last two terms, followed by a graduation dinner organised by the participants themselves.

Each session, handled entirely by the young Toastmasters, is run like a business meeting with an agenda and minutes. Apart from prepared and unprepared speeches, listening skills are improved and confidence is gained. The successful candidates are awarded a certificate issued by the Toastmasters headquarters in America.

See News & Events Highlights for Toastmaster Graduation results.
